The "Faculty"

The following scholars, teachers, writers, and practitioners have contributed articles or entire chapters to The Portable Seminary. In an effort to assemble the best material possible, some contributions were assigned and others were reprinted (with permission) from previously published works. The purpose of these contributions is not mere intellectual stimulation, but to spur you on ‘‘to love and good works.’’

THOMAS A. ASKEW, PhD, earned his doctorate from Northwestern University. He is Stephen Phillips Professor of History Emeritus and former Executive Director of the East-West Institute of International Studies at Gordon College. He is coauthor (with Richard Pierard) of The American Church Experience: A Concise History.

WILLIAM P. BARKER, was Director of Continuing Education at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Prior to that he served many years as a pastor in Pittsburgh. He authored Who’s Who in Church History among other books.

DONALD G. BLOESCH, PhD, earned his doctorate from the University of Chicago. He is Professor of Theology Emeritus, Dubuque Theological Seminary. He is author of Essentials of Evangelical Theology and the Christian Foundations series.

LILLIAN BRECKENRIDGE, PhD, is Director of Assessment and Associate Professor of Counseling and Education at Oral Roberts University, Graduate School of Theology. She earned her doctorate from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. She and her husband, James Breckenridge, are coauthors of What Color Is Your God?

PAUL G. CHAPPELL, PhD, Executive Vice-President at The King's Seminary, earned his doctorate from Drew University.

ROBERT G. CLOUSE, PhD, Professor of History, Indiana State University, earned his doctorate from the University of Iowa. He is author or editor of numerous books, including The Story of the Church, and The Essential Bible.

KEVIN M. CRAGG, PhD, Professor of History, Bethel University, earned his doctorate from the University of Michigan. He is coauthor (with Paul R. Spickard) of A Global History of Christians.

JAMES D. G. DUNN, PhD, Emeritus Lightfoot Professor of Divinity at the University of Durham, England, earned his doctorate from Cambridge University. He is the author of Theology of Paul the Apostle, among other books.

WALTER A. ELWELL, PhD, is author or editor of numerous books, including the Evangelical Dictionary of Theology and the Baker Theological Dictionary of the Bible. A former book-review editor for Christianity Today, he is Emeritus Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies at Wheaton College. He earned his doctorate from the University of Edinburgh.

GILLIAN R. EVANS, PhD, DLitt, Professor of History at Cambridge University, earned her PhD from the University of Reading, and DLitt degrees from both Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Among her many books is Faith in the Medieval World.

PAUL D. FEINBERG, ThD, earned his doctorate from Dallas Theological Seminary. He was coauthor (with his brother, Dr. John Feinberg) of Ethics for a Brave New World. He was Professor of Biblical and Systematic Theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School until his death in 2004.

PAUL W. FERRIS,JR., PhD, is Professor of Old Testament at Bethel Theological Seminary. He earned his doctorate from Dropsie College and is author of The Genre of Communal Lament in the Bible and the Ancient Near East.

KENNETH O. GANGEL, PhD,  Litt D, DD, is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Christian Education, Dallas Theological Seminary, scholar-in-residence at Toccoa Falls College, and adjunct faculty of Columbia Biblical Seminary and School of Missions. He earned his doctorate from the University of Missouri, and is the author or editor of several books, including The Christian Educators Handbook on Spiritual Formation.

NORMAN L. GEISLER, PhD, is Dean and Professor of Theology and Apologetics at Southern Evangelical Seminary. He earned his doctorate from Loyola University. He is author or editor of numerous books, including his four-volume Systematic Theology.

DAVID W. GILL, PhD, is founding Professor of Ethics at New College Berkeley. He is author of Doing Right: Practical Ethical Principles, and other books. He earned his doctorate from the University of Southern California.

ARTHUR F. GLASSER, DD, Dean Emeritus of Fuller School of World Mission, earned his doctorate from Covenant Theological Seminary.

JULIE GORMAN, DMin, Professor and Director of the Christian Formation and Discipleship Program at Fuller Theological Seminary, earned her doctorate at Fuller. She is author of several books, including Community That Is Christian: A Handbook on Small Groups.

GENE L. GREEN, PhD, Professor of New Testament, Wheaton College, earned his doctorate in New Testament Exegesis from the University of Aberdeen. He is author of The Letters to the Thessalonians.

EDWARD L. HAYES, PhD, President Emeritus of Denver Seminary, is coauthor (with Charles Swindoll and Roy Zuck) of The Church: The Body of Christ in the World of Today. He earned his doctorate from the University of Denver.

WALTER R. HEARN, PhD, is editor for the American Scientific Affiliation Newsletter and adjunct Professor of Science at New College for Advanced Christian Studies, Berkeley, California. He earned his doctorate from the University of Illinois.

CARL F. H. HENRY, PhD, earned his doctorate from Boston University. He is author of many theological works, including God, Revelation and Authority. Dr. Henry passed away in 2003.

IRVING HEXHAM, PhD, earned his doctorate from the University of Bristol. He is Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Calgary. Among books he has authored is Understanding Cults and New Age Religions (with Karla Poewe and J. I. Packer).

ARLIE J. HOOVER, PhD, Professor of History, Abilene Christian University, earned his doctorate from the University of Texas, Austin.

LIN JOHNSON, MS, National-Louis University, is adjunct professaor at Taylor University. She is an award-winning freelance writer, and editor of several publications.

BYRON D. KLAUS, DMin, President of Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, earned his doctorate from Fuller Theological Seminary.

MARLENE D. LEFEVER, MA, Wheaton College, is Vice-President for Educational Development at Cook Communications. She is a conference speaker, consultant, and guest lecturer in colleges and seminaries across North America, and is author of Learning Styles.

GORDON R. LEWIS, PhD, Senior Professor of Christian Philosophy and Theology at Denver Seminary, earned his doctorate from Syracuse University. He is author of Testing Christianity’s Truth Claims.

HUGH DERMOT MCDONALD, PhD, DD, was formerly Vice-Principal of London Bible College. He earned his doctorate from the University of London.

ALISTER E. MCGRATH, DPhil, Professor of Historical Theology at Oxford University, earned his doctorate from Oxford. He is author of several books, including Theology: The Basics.

DONALD K. MCKIM, PhD, Academic and Reference Editor for Westminster John Knox Press, was previously Academic Dean and Professor of Theology at Memphis Theological Seminary. He earned his doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh.

JAMES E. MEANS, PhD, Professor of Pastoral Ministries and Homiletics at Denver Seminary, is author of Leadership in Christian Ministry. He earned his doctorate from the University of Denver.

BERKELEY MICKELSEN, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Biblical Interpretation at Bethel Theological Seminary, earned his doctorate from the University of Chicago.

SCOTT MOREAU, DMiss, Department Chair and Professor of Missions, Wheaton College, earned his doctorate from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He is author or editor of several books, including Introducing World Missions.


LEON L. MORRIS, PhD, Cambridge University. Formerly Principal of Ridley College in Melbourne, Australia, he is author of The Apostolic Preaching of the Cross, and many other books.

MARK A. NOLL, PhD, is Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame after twenty-eight years at Wheaton College. He earned his doctorate from Vanderbilt University, and is author of America’s God: From Jonathan Edwards to Abraham Lincoln, among many others.

FREDERICK A. NORWOOD, PhD, former Professor Emeritus of History of Christianity at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, earned his doctorate from Yale University. He authored The Development of Modern Christianity Since 1500.

LIDIJA NOVAKOVIC, PhD, Associate Professor of New Testament, Baylor University, earned her doctorate from Princeton University.

THOMAS HENRY LOUIS PARKER, DD, was Emeritus Reader in Theology at Durham University, England.

RICHARD V. PIERARD, PhD, earned his doctorate from the Univeristy of Iowa. He is Professor of History at Indiana State University, and coauthor (with Thomas Askew) of The American Church Experience: A Concise History.

W. GARY PHILLIPS, ThD, was Distinguished Professor of Biblical Studies at Bryan College before becoming pastor of Signal Mountain Bible Church, Chattanooga, Tennessee. He earned his doctorate from Grace Theological Seminary. His most recent book is Judges and Ruth.

MICHAEL REDDING, MDiv, is author of Great Themes: Understanding the Bible’s Core Doctrines and Times and Places: Picturing the Events of the Bible. He earned his Master’s degree from Grace Theological Seminary.

ROBERT L. SAUCY, ThD, Dallas Theological Seminary. Saucy is Distinguished Professor of Systematic Theology at Biola University in La Mirada, California, author of The Church in God’s Program, and coauthor (with Neil T. Anderson) of Unleashing God’s Power in You.

MARK SHAW, ThD, is a missionary and teaches History and Theology at Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology in Kenya. He is the author of Ten Great Ideas from Church History. He earned his doctorate from Westminster Theological Seminary.

BRUCE L. SHELLEY, PhD, Senior Professor of Church History and Historical Theology at Denver Theological Seminary, earned his doctorate from the University of Iowa. He is author of Church History in Plain Language.

DONALD K. SMITH, PhD, is Chair of the Division of Intercultural Studies at Western Seminary. He earned his doctorate from the University of Oregon.

PAUL R. SPICKARD, PhD, is Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He earned his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. He is coauthor (with Kevin M. Cragg) of A Global History of Christians.

JAMES J. STAMOOLIS, ThD, former Executive Director of World Evangelical Fellowship’s Theological Commission, is Senior Vice-President of Academic Affairs and Dean for Trinity College and Trinity Graduate School. He earned his doctorate from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa.

ROBERT H. STEIN, PhD, Senior Professor of New Testament Interpretation, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, earned his doctorate from Princeton University. He is author of A Basic Guide to Interpretting the Bible.

JOHN R. W. STOTT, DD, internationally acclaimed as a gifted preacher and biblical scholar, earned his doctorate at Cambridge University. He is author of many books, including Basic Christianity and Understanding the Bible.

VINSON SYNAN, PhD, Dean of the School of Divinity, Regent University, earned his doctorate from the University of Georgia. He is author of Voices of Pentecost.

TITE TIENOU, PhD, Dean and Professor of Theology of Missions at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, earned his doctorate from Fuller Theological Seminary.

GEOFF TUNNICLIFFE, MA, Wheaton College, is International Director of the World Evangelical Alliance and Chair of Evangelical Fellowship of Canada’s Global Mission Roundtable. He is author of 101 Ways to Change Your World.

HOWARD F. VOS, ThD, PhD, Professor of History and Archaeology at The Kings College, Briarcliff Manor, New York, earned his doctorates from Dallas Theological Seminary and Northwestern University respectively. He is author or coauthor of numerous books, including The AMG Concise Introduction to the Bible.

PETER WAGNER, PhD, is Donald A. McGavran Professor of Church Growth at Fuller School of World Mission. He earned his doctorate from the University of Southern California. He is author of Your Spiritual Gifts Can Help Your Church Grow.

LARRY LEE WALKER, PhD, is Professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages at Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary in Memphis. He earned his doctorate from Dropsie College.

RONALD S. WALLACE, PhD, former Professor of Biblical Theology at Columbia Theological Seminary, earned his doctorate from the University of Edinburgh. He is author of The Message of Daniel.

TIMOTHY P. WEBER, PhD, President of Memphis Theological Seminary, earned his doctorate from the University of Chicago. He is author of On the Road to Armageddon: How Evangelicals Became Israel’s Best Friend.

REGINALD E. O. WHITE, MA, former Principal of Baptist Theological College, Glasgow, earned his degree from the University of Liverpool. He is author of Apostle Extraordinary.

DENNIS E. WILLIAMS, PhD, is Dean of the School of Christian Education and Leadership and Professor of Christian Education at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He earned his doctorate from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

MARVIN R. WILSON, PhD, is The Harold J. Ockenga Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies, Gordon College. He earned his doctorate from Brandeis University.

ROBERT W. YARBROUGH, PhD, is Associate Professor of New Testament at Trinity International University and coeditor of the Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament series. He earned his doctorate from the University of Aberdeen.

TIMOTHY E. YATES, DMiss, earned his doctorate at the University of Uppsala, Sweden. He is former tutor and lecturer at St. John’s College, University of Durham, England, and is author of The Expansion of Christianity.

RAVI ZACHARIAS, MDiv, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, is President of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries, a speaker respected worldwide, and author of many books, including Jesus Among Other Gods. His weekly radio program, Let My People Think, is heard globally on more than a thousand radio stations.
